Internet radio is the new frontier for indie artists. Any time that an artist’s songs are played on one of these stations based here in the US, he or she is due a royalty! If your songs are being played on a station that complies with the law, you have money owed to you (regardless of how much or how little airplay you received).
Sound Exchange is a nonprofit organization authorized by the US government to collect and disperse these royalties. Joining is free, and every artist should be a member! If you are getting Internet airplay but not receiving a quarterly royalty check, you are missing out on a potentially substantial revenue stream!
John Styll is the Founder and CEO of StyllPoint Consulting, a music industry consulting firm. He is currently assisting Sound Exchange in their mission to help all artists get paid for Internet airplay. Before he established StyllPoint Consulting, he was the President and Chief Executive Officer of the not-for-profit Gospel Music Association (GMA), The Christian Music Trade Association (CMTA) and the GMA Foundation (GMAF).
