Can somebody tell me why so many engineers feel the need to bash whatever format they're not using? ProTools users hate Logic. Logic users hate ProTools. Nuendo (did I spell that right?) users despise all others. I personally don't care what the format as long as the end result pleases me. I've been a ProTools guys for the longest and I like it but it doesn't bother me to work with someone on another format. I personally believe there will be several formats in Heaven . . . just tired of feeling the need to defend my friend ProTools.

I'd give anything to be the floormat at your place!
I've always been of the school that you use a floormat to cover a worn place in the carpet, not to cover up the new carpet in the car.
I like to think the floormat should represent the person standing on it, but that's just me.
hey - speaking of direct to disc - - does anyone out there have any of the Sheffield Labs stuff?

I have never heard it, I would love to hook up with some to see(hear) what all they hype was about.
I have the James Newton-Howard project on a gold platted CD. It was all the Toto cats (plus Dad Joe), all playing Yamaha FM synths... it's awesome!
Aaron, I grew up on one of the the Sheffield projects. It was a 1975 thing called "Pressure Cooker". Schnee did it. Great project. My dad may still have it.
Scott, I didn't know you lived in the projects!
MAN!! you guys just brought back a FLOOD of memories. I have 3 of those Sheffield Labs projects: Pressure Cooker, James Newton Howard & Friends (the DX7 demo!) and Tower of Power direct. They are all cool in their own way....not sure the "hype" would stand up after all these years. However, my favorite memory is seeing Pressure Cooker on vinyl, hanging with my friend who worked in the Hi-Fi dept. of Service Merchandise (remember them?) and opening up the cover and seeing all the pics of the musicians (Michael Omartian! hey...somebody invite him on here....wait, I'll do it) and thinking (high school age, remember) how freakin' COOL those hand-copied/calligraphy charts looked!! I have been fascinated with great copy-work ever since. Still use the Jazz font on Finale. (God, I am SUCH a geek.....sigh.....) Man....I miss those huge album covers. Somehow, downloading the iTunes "digital booklet" just isn't the same. Even the name sounds dumb. "Digital booklet". Sounds like some virtual doily yer computer grandma knitted. (I can hear everyone on the site going, "Huh?" ) lol.....
I can never READ the digital booklets, even with my grandpa glasses :) But thats just BAD design, hmmm, maybe I need to create Nashville Graphics Pros :) I must stop myself....!
ok - really, sometime I have to hook up with you guys to give a listen--

I actually remember a copy of one in Hi-Fi buys many years ago - and thot hhhmmm - but not for $28. LOL
I remember that...did a bunch too...lots of fun too....
I haven't read all the replies, but I wanted to interject something. Format bashing is the BIGGEST tell of ignorance. Seasoned engineers know this. Some of you have alluded to this. I always ask the person 2 questions.. 1) Have you used that format? 2) Can you afford to buy that format? Usually the answer is no and no, and the stupdity is exposed.

Any great engineer can make a format sound good. Remember cassette 4-track, Akai 12-track, ADAT, Fostex, yada yada.
Truth is, the programs we have now, are way beyond what we could conceive of 20 years ago. The $99 program sounds as good as the $150,000 Sony DASH machine did 10 years ago, you just need the right guy running it.
