We have seen alot of changes in the last 5 years. The music business has shifted, the way people listen to music has changed, and the way records are done has evolved. As writers, producers, engineers, and musicians we will have to continue to adapt. Will there still be studios? Sessions could be from our houses linked by iChat. Will music be "free"? The new generation of kids rarely pay for music. Will so many people make their own records that no one will care?

What are your predictions? What does the future look like?

My top 3:
1. No more CD's. Hi-Rez mp3's will take over.
2. Wal-Mart will sell songs for 29 cents.
3. All cars will be 5.1 Surround

o.k. another..
4. Avid will own Apple or Apple will own Avid (Digidesign)

Prince has started only giving his records away at concerts...
Can't buy them.
there is already some big free distribution sites that are trying the advertising model. http://www.spiralfrog.com/
has signed distribution agreements with quite a few labels, some big ones included. Consumers get their music for free and are exposed to advertising while downloading.

I am not sure how well this will work, but the consumers are happy. :) This site limits what you can do with the music though, it cannot be put on an ipod, it cannot be burned. it only works on mp3 players that use microsoft's DRM, so zune and a few others. Basically, the music is only listenable on your computer and a select few mp3 players. You get what you pay for though. :)

I am still enjoying all the satchmo and ella fitzgerald I can DL

Salute!

Acording to the Mayan calnder the world will end December 21st 2012 anyways so will there really be a 5 years from now? We can only really guess at what will come and enjoy where we are now.
Rock on,
PEPPER
Pepper,

will you still have that pre-amp I want 5 years from now?
Maybe Version 2.0 will be avail.? LOL Have a nice weekend!
shoot, man i just started buying record albums on vinyl! i have an iPod and rarely use it. music still is a social / gathering event at my place.

very often i listen to a record from top to bottom and that's what i do - listen to it. not play video games, talk on the phone, exercise, and all the other misc. things people do while music plays in the background. so many friends of mine can't even get through one song without wanting to track to the next one. i call this syndrome - iPoditis. pretty soon songs will get reduced to a verse / chorus / breakdown / chorus format spanning 1 min 20 secs.

i'm not against change, but i plan to hang on to my hang to my habits on as long as possible. there are still artist making records for me.
It seems like everybody writes now and that no one covets his neighbor's music. Only a few iconic figures seem to do well. Maybe Miley Cyrus and ABBA and Kid Rock.
