Legendary bassist Jackie Street passed away last night. He will be missed greatly by many. I count myself blessed to have worked with Jackie over the years. In fact, the last two tracking sessions I was on, Jackie was in the house. What a joy. One of my fondest memories was that Jackie ALWAYS sat in the control room! It was a blast for me (being an engineer and a wannabe bass player). We would make fun of everybody out on the studio floor and the banter over the talk-back was all that more entertaining. He was so much fun. He was a kind and loving person to all. One of the emails I got quote Mark Baldwin saying, "Heaven just got a lot funkier." I couldn't agree more.

Please feel free to share your memories of Jackie with us...

For those who have not heard: Jackie's mom, Mrs. Eveleaner Street, whom he cared so much for, passed away last Wednesday evening (March 26). Please keep the Street family in your thoughts and prayers as they have definitely been handed more than their share of emotional issues to process in a short period of time. They (and the world) have lost two incredible people in the last six weeks. For all of us who realized that Jackie was a wonderful example of how we all are meant to live, if you've ever talked with Eveleaner (as I have) it's easy to realize that so much of who Jackie was came by way of her example. Even if we never met her, if Jackie touched our lives at all then she had a strong influence on us in a most positive way. She will be missed, along with Jackie.
I loved Jackie though I never told him
( a bad habit some of us have).
I would always run into him multiple times on Mondays and Tuesdays as we made our rounds.
I would have to do all the talking (lol).......
....I once saved his bass from bad things. We were at Recording Arts studio listening to the playback of a track we brought him in for. Everyone was up at the board but I was in the back of the room. It was loud. Loud enough to vibrate his bass off the table it was balanced on. I saw it fall in slow motion and dove. I caught it just in time for the playback to finish and everyone turned around to see me face down holding that thing. Billy was like, "What are you doing with his bass???".

I'm glad I was exposed to his playing. I'd still be writing Steve Harris lines if it weren't for JS.

r.i.p.
Just found a pre-Imperials picture of young Jackie Street yesterday. I scanned and uploaded it to my page but thought I should I should put it up here for those who have contributed to this discussion.

The photo was scanned from an 8x10 glossy of the group 'Eternity,' circa 1982, a year or less prior to when Jackie joined the Imperials. I knew I had the photo but forgot that it included Jackie, who played with the group until joining the Imperials. I arranged an album for 'Eternity' around that time and met Jackie for the first time during that process. But since we used session players on the rhythm tracks I didn't work with him until later.

Appropriately, Jackie is standing next to the drummer (Scott Weckerly - in sunglasses - still in Nashville AFAIK).

I located a video tape from a tracking session I did with Jackie in 1994, and finally digitized it. Just uploaded to the videos, here.
I actually got to meet Jackie through a mutual friend back a few years ago. She was very close to Jackie. She and her husband renewed their vows and Jackie came and played with the band we had set up for the ceremony. It was wonderful getting the opportunity to meet and play with Jackie, if only for one time. He was a great guy. He will be missed.
Here's a photo of Jackie in action at Reflection Studios mid-to-late 1980's. One of my fond memories of Jackie tracking (in control room of course), was when he decided to stand while playing. I always knew great things were going to happen on the B string when JS stood up. Somehow, Jackie had a one-of-a-kind command of that wonderful string. Always tasty. I will miss this friend and remarkable musician.

Five years later... I still miss Jackie.

Jackie will always be with us, keeping us in the groove...
