I recently got back some files to mix that I record 95% of, several of the songs still needed BGVs and with a masterling deadline looming in the future and my schedule, they had to be farmed out.

Now as I have have said time after time, I DO NOT consider myself Gods Gift to mixers, but maybe just the apostle of neatness.

The Comment Box On Pro Tools: USE IT!!! Who sang it, where did you sing it, who are you, what is your contact info, anything special about the mic or pre amp??? what was the date of YOUR MAGIC recording session.........

Don't send me tracks back labeled: Audio 1, Audio 2, etc.....

Don't send me back files without cross fades.......

Don't send me back crossfades in the middle of breaths......

Consolidate those tracks when you are finished. If you're scared to, make an alt playlist, then crossfade and consolidate..........

Look at the labeling process for the sessions. If there is only one then OK, but if someone goes through the effort to keep track of progress as such:

Title 01 Tracks
Title 02 Lead Vocals
Title 03 Comps/Tuning

Don't send me back sessions that are labeled:

Title 03 Studio Name

This screws up the sequence....

This is the correct way:

Title 04 BGVs Studio Name

Don't place your new tracks at the end of the track list, behind the inactive tracks, under theMIDI track heading UNUSED!!!!

Every engineer needs to read the Pro Tools protocol setup by NARAS. I'll post a link next in this blog...........The schools need to teach this!!!!!! Every intern should be required to memorise It!!!

I could go on but I'll let others post their bad Pro Tools Editors stories.....

P.S. Also, It wouldn't hurt to learn how to use a compressor...............

This is my PT mix setup sheet. Not quite as detailed as the NARAS one but, it gets the basic point across.

That's great JR. If only we could conform the whole town........ Hope others use the info that get provided here at NMP!!!!!!!!!!
I'm with you, Mark. I'd even go as far to say that your should ALWAYS keep a playlist of the unconsolidated track before doing the duplicated consolidated one. It sometimes comes in pretty handy to have that in case a crossfade didn't work, or if I want to peel back and hear an alternate performance. If it was done right to begin with, I can delete the other playlist then.
That's actually the way I do it when sending files to a mix engineer. I actually do save session as for starters so I don't mess up where I was at. Check all my cross fades. Consolidate but when I do label the new tracks with either *** or ^^^ so they show up first in the audio files window. I will also take any tracks that were used to make comps with and do the same thing with them in case they find they need a line or different lick in the mix. Then I create a new session with the tempo map and any other pertinent info, import the audio files into the session and walla, the mix engineer has everything they need. If the producer wants to show the mix engineer the direction he'd like to go we'll burn a mix for him but this gives him total freedom to do as he pleases with only the info he needs and won't tax his computer with extraneous files.
a loud and hearty AMEN from my corner on the above bitches/requests.

my only question is, what does one do when he has a clearly defined turn in sheet and most of his clients ignore it anyway?

question for you j.r., is it okay if i change my last name to mcneely so maybe i'll gets a little client love in this regard?
You could always ditch your clients.... HAHAHAHAHAHA
ya know what's funny?

i almost commented that this thread was quite similar to an earlier blog.

but i didn't.

and here we go again...

so i'll retract my earlier post and say, "everything's coming up roses." : )
Hahaha!!!

I seem to remember.........it was..........nevermind.

I love you Man!

BTW, the setup sheet only works about 80% of the time. Even if your last name is McNeely!
