I'm setting up to record a live worship event for a College campus ministry. I did the same thing last year and recently produced and mixed the project. The crowd is very much a part of the recording so this year I want to give myself more options on crowd mics.
The room is approx 2100 seats and will be full of energetic college kids. There is a lower section of 500 seats then stadium seating to fill out the rest.
Last year I used the in house hanging mics and added two of my own. My two were cardioid condensors on the stage facing into the room. I would have used a pair of shotguns on each side if I had access to any.
The house mics are about halfway back in the lower section hanging 15 feet over the crowd and away from stage.
When I mixed I used 70% stage mics, 30% hanging mics.
This year I also have a pair of 414's. I was thinking of setting them in the stadium seats on either side of the sound board and setting them up in omni.
So give me you opinions.
1st: If you could mic the room any way you wanted possibly to mix in 5.1 as well as stereo, what would you do and use?
2nd: With the 3 pairs of mics I listed (hanging choir mics, cardioid condensors and 414's), how would you set it up. Keep in mind I cannot move the house mics that are hanging.
I could also add a single Shure KSM44 somewhere.
Thanks!
Garrett
