I have a vocal client who is also a guitar player. He has a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis. This guy is an amazing spirit... he continues to write songs, sing and perform, and intends to do so for as long as he possibly can. Lately the crippling effect in his fingers is really getting in the way of his guitar playing. He went to a surgeon ( in another state) who put a rod in one of his fingers, but not being a musician this (out of town) surgeon just made it completely impossible to bend that finger. True to form, this player just uses his other fingers to creatively form chords.
He has asked me to dig around for any recommendations I can find for surgeons who understand the needs of musicians. Anyone got a name?

Your client's "whatever it takes" attitude is truly inspirational. He may want to contact Dr. Douglas Weikert, MD, a hand specialist at Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Weikert is helping my wife to work through complications from wrist surgery (which he did not perform) and he seems to know his stuff. It's a place to start. Hope this helps.
Vanderbilt Orthopaedic Institute - (615) 790-4280. Ask for Dr.Weikert's nurse - Joanne. She's pretty busy. Your client may have to leave a message, but she will call back.
