I have two reasons for writing this. 1. I have my own kids who want to learn instruments and develop their talents. 2. I'm looking at helping develop the talent of a 10 year old kid who shows a lot of promise.

I'm curious about people's thoughts who've had experience with either issue.

First, with my own kids, my 4 year old (nearly 5) daughter wants to learn violin and piano. We have a piano, and I just bought her a small scale violin that fits her. We're ready to roll. Any suggestions on teachers on the Franklin area? Also, how young is too young on Piano? She likes to sit and play, but won't let me teach her. She'll let a "teacher" teach her, though. I was the same way with my mom when she tried to teach me.

Second... So I found this kid who's 10, nearly 11. She has a super unique voice, and has tremendous potential. But as it stands now, she's just another 10 year old who can stand up and sing in church. But her tone is so unique. She's a cute kid, not tons of personality, but enough to get by (in other words, probably not a disney kid potential). My goal is for her to work through voice and piano lessons. She could be studio ready for kids music within a very short period of time. I'd like to get her that experience. I'm not looking to sign her up for an album or two just yet. I just want to help develop her talent, and see where it goes from there. But if I'm right, I think she'll have her first album out within five years.

So here's what we're doing: 1. voice lessons. 2. Piano lessons.

Simple enough, right?

I doubt it. What experiences have you all had?

Cheers,

Pete

There are two common motivations, a desire for attention and a love of music. The desire for attention indeed wears off when kids (not to mention adults) realize how much work is actually involved.

I can trace my love for music to early experiences when my mother took me to symphony concerts and Broadway shows. The sound gave me chills. I've spent the rest of my life seeking that experience. One of my greatest disappointments was when I found it unbelievably difficult to find very many of those kinds of acoustical music experiences to share with my daughter.
Amen to that Bob. My influences came pretty much the same way. Was a big Broadway fan. My mother took me to plays also. And the same things with my daughter as well.

Same here. My mom was a conductor and composer. My drive came from a love for it. I'd imagine that is common to most of us support types. I find artists have a different motivation. They crave and enjoy the spotlight. The deliniating factor is often if their drive and love for the spotligt outweighs the challenges of acheiving it. As for me, I'd just as soon have my back tote audience and a baton in my right hand. But even then, I'd rather have my back to a console, where I get to do it again until it's right!
Very astute observations there Sir Peter. I love us highly intellegent people.

My Mother's boss was a very successful busnessman and member of the Jewish Community Center in Birmingham, Al. They continuously had plays and musicals. When I got into high school, I acted quite a bit.Theater training helped me learn to project, which if you ever talk to anyone who has seen me perform, they will tell you I learned well. That helped me in later years as I became a songwriter as well as a performer. Being able to act the lyrics, make sure the audience could hear me, ennunciate so they could understand them, have helped me in communicating to audiences.
So theater training helped me in all my endevors, from writing to performing, now to teaching. Has served me well.

Funny enough, I rebelled at about age 14 from classical music. Picked up guitar dreaming of being the next Dann Huff. Silly enough, I know. But it never worked out for me until I naturally went back to my roots in classical music out of a love for it. And wham! Hello career! I coilnt have planned it worse, but it all worked out. The funny thing was that if my parents hadn't immersed me in the arts, I'd still likely still be a wannabe Huff, playing guitar in my garage with my buddies. Of course, I'd still have considered myself an engineer for the sole reason of owning a DAW. That's a joke, folks.
