Digital Mixing Consoles
I'm putting together a request for a couple live sound systems for a few of our groups. We're having some difficulty deciding on which boards to build the two systems around? We are heavily leaning toward a Yamaha LS-9 32ch and LS-9 16ch because one of our sound guys has some experience working with them. However, the Army doesn't hire dedicated sound engineers, so we're doing the best we can.
Will some of you live sound gurus chime in with your opinions on various digital live mixing boards?
I could really use your help. Thanks!

From my understanding, the LS software is pretty much the same as the M7CL (without the touchscreen capability). I find that software very easy to work on - once you fully understand it. There is a bit of a learning curve. There are probably a lot of different opinions out there but I think it depends mostly on what you get used to and less about function and overall sound quality. I have been using Yamaha digital consoles extensively since the ProMix01 so I am naturally drawn to their consoles because of familiarity. I could be OK mixing a live show on a Mackie if I had to.
You might want to check our the Presonus line of digital mixers. Also, I have several friends who have Tascam DM-4800s and love their capabilities.

The M7CL would eat up a large portion of our budget, but it sure does look great! That's why we're leaning toward the LS9's. However, we will take a look at the Presonus line and the Tascam too. Thanks for the recommendations, Bret.

I kind of figured that price was a concerned, that's why I suggested the Presonus and Tascam as options, however I would lean to the LS-9 series if I were putting a system together but even those can be pricey.

The LS-9s are great little desks. They take a little using to learn the menus, but once you do, they can handle just about any small show you can throw at them.
The new Presonus digital desks are pretty nice too. I just put one through it's paces at a recent event, and was a bit disappointed, but only because my expectations were so high. They are also laid out a bit differently than the Yamaha desks, which almost got me in trouble a couple times - but all in all they are a great value - especially if you want to FireWire in and multitrack your shows.
Another little desk I'm intrigued by is the Roland VMix series. I've only played with one in a shop, never in a live environment, but I was impressed with it. You should check those out too.
Bottom line, though - if your guy has experience with the Yamaha desks, and you can fit them into your budget - go with them. They are tried and true, with plenty of support available and the other desks are still fairly new and fewer guys have experience with them.
