Thought this might be a fun topic. Probably more suited for Halloween but... I spent the weekend working at a studio, and experienced some interesting situations. I have heard from friends over the years who have talked about about "haunted" studios, and wondered if anyone else has any experiences to share?

For me, I worked 3 three days at a particular studio on Grand. I was set up in the front studio by the old fireplace under the Elvis portrait... I experienced someone or "something" pulling my strap off my bass - not once, but three times... almost sending it crashing to the floor. I have never had my strap suddenly come off this particular bass in 32 years.. It has very wide strap buttons. You would have to give it extra attention to get it off, yet it came off 3 times over a several hour period. I also experienced de tunings.... I would leave the room and come back later to find my bass was detuned both sharp and flat on the different strings... Normally, I tune this bass and leave it... The same bass - my onboard battery drained twice (it should normally last for several months if plugged in continuously,) and I constantly smelled the odor of human urine in the area of the studio Hammond B3. I kept mentioning the smell to the other players but no one smelled it but me. Smelled like I was in a back ally behind a bar or something... wasn't the smell of cat or dog pee. It was human.

The next day, I didn't smell anything, nor did I have any problems with my strap, tuning, or batteries. I mentioned to the second engineer about my experience , and he said "Oh yeah! Let me show you the Neve room." At which point he led me to the other side of the studio. As soon as he opened the door to that room I felt dizzy and near faint. He explained that there have been several sessions where a woman in a white has appeared. He also mentioned that he was alone in the studio and closing up late one night, and the phone started ringing.... but it was being rung from another intercom line from inside the studio.

I have had several friends mention "hauntings" in studios in Franklin... children laughing or being heard running up or down stairs?

Anyone else have experiences?

I've experienced some haunted consoles, more often than I care to remember. Maybe someone urinated in them. LOL!
The Castle is haunted!
I heard that the Bennet House was also...?
LOL!
yea, i think my dad has been here when im tracking in the house of grady, not only that, i live on a farm where there is a graveyard dating back to 1700s and have had some funky dreams out here when i first moved out here, other than that, its a nice peaceful inspiring place to cut, very pretty land out here in chapel hill tn, not to many studios to compete with either
Tim,

Some of the legends told stories of hauntings at the old Monument/Masterlink studio tonight at the AES Legends in the Round Event. At one time the building was a mortuary. But one particularly funny one was about Bobby Goldsboro sneaking downstairs into the live echo chamber while they were mixing and making cricket sounds, ducking out when the engineer would come down to investigate then sneaking back in when they went back upstairs.
Wow, how great is that!! I love hearing stories like that.
I live in Franklin. I know that sometimes, well after having recorded tracks in my home studio, I get to editing or solo'ing a track, and I hear odd sounds on the tracks. Thinks like Vacuums, children screaming, a mother screaming back at children, their footsteps up and down the stairs... I even hear things like garage doors opening and closing. Even motors and airplanes sometimes too!

I have often wondered if perhaps all these odd things on the tracks are also responsible for causing the musicians and singers that work in my studio, from time to time, sing off pitch or play bad notes. Sometimes my gear mysteriously stops working even. As though there were something in there causing my tubes to die and my hard drives or operating system to crash. Sometimes I find that I go back the next day and listen to my work, and realize that there must have been something in there that caused me to miss hearing something that really needed to be fixed. It's as though in the daylight I can hear what I couldn't hear the night before.

I often wonder...
Ghosts must not be very good engineers. Give 'em credit though, they're trying!
Interesting topic ...

I did some late night sessions there in the 80s and it was certainly creepy. No things that go bump in the night, however.
Well with all that said, my experience was probably due to the Vindaloo and Paneer I ate the night before.
