I have wanted to put this out there for the general public and see what people's take are on the following. Who are the top 10 most influential guitar players in history. It's not a popularity contest here or what people have told you over the years, it's who you think changed the face of guitar and guitar playing over the years. It's what the guitarists brought to the table with either a technique, style, riffs, guitar product, even production ideas as a guitar player, basically anything that changed the face of guitar for everyone after them. You don't have to have an order of 1-10, just the top 10 in your mind and heart. I'm not going to put mine down right now but I'll start with Eddie Van Halen as one of the ten on my list. Everyone have fun with this.

mine goes to 11,
Robert Johnson - credited with inventing the 12 bar blues genera. The rest follow him.
Jimi Hendrix
Mark Knopfler
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Eddie Van Halen
Jeff Beck (Huff credits him as his biggest influence)
Phil Keaggy
Eric Johnson
Steve Lukather
Mike Landau
Dann Huff

I'm sorry... I know that's 11. I couldn't think of a single one to drop from that list. I'd have gone with the ones that Bret mentioned as well. Every one of them.
This got me thinking... most of the players listed so far, while influential, were also some of the most INFLUENCED players of all time. If you read any of their stories, its all about the players that inspired them. Just something to think about. Dan Huff is probably the most influenced of them all right now and making it work LOL! (I don't think he would be mad at me for saying that)
I am sure he wouldn't be mad about it.

When I was a kid, I moved here at 17. I met Dann first time over at little pig. A buddy of mine told me he was in town, and we just headed over there like a couple of gherms. (Bret, I know you'll love that). Anyway, Dann was a cool guy. I very clearly remember that for me, at the time, he, landau and lukather were the guys I thought hung the moon. And they did. They were my influences. I remember thinking that lukather and EVH were probably his main influences. But he told me knopfer and beck were. So yeah, I think he'd agree.
Wait, did I just name drop? LOL.
By now, everyone knows how close you and Dann are...
LOL!
Yup. Best buds. LOL. Of course, the last time I spoke with him was 15 years ago, I think.
Without much thought:
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Jeff Beck
Eddie Van Halen
Albert Lee
The Edge
Any three of the players on Steely Dan records
A few more (and a few that have already been named)

Les Paul
Link Wray
Chet Atkins
B.B. King
Jimi Hendrix
George Harrison
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Eddie VanHalen
Leo Fender (Not sure how much he played but....I'd say he was pretty influential on alot of guitar players!)
Steely Dan has had a huge roster of great guitar players. Do you mean just Denny Diaz, Skunk Baxter and Elliot Randall?
Interesting read so far. Many of the people listed are the 10 that I've got on my list. I will wait to post my 10 as more people respond to this.
