I've been asked to do a voice over piece, as in narration for the introduction of a documentary.
I am unsure as to how to price this work, which will be just about 3 minutes in duration. Is $50.00 an hour fair (it's what I charge for other vocal work) or is there another pricing scale for this kind of work?

Thanks in advance to anyone who had done this kind of work...I'm used to doing radio trailers and lead in pieces for radio stations and movie channels, but have not done actual documentary work.
It's crazy, the new a different things that have come my way the past two weeks!

$50 is what I would charge. In and out, you do the work. Should be simple enough.

I was thinking that was fair...I did some research, and there is a pay scale depending on the size of project, and length of the voice over. Those are priced for the work, and the artist takes care of the recording. A further search revealed that most voice over artists have their own capabilities to record projects in their own studios.
A two and a half minute voice over, at pay scale 1 is an average of $125.00 give or take a little...after 30 seconds, it is flexible. This would include covering the studio work...so our estimates were pretty close, Marc.
Good stuff to know!
price depends on the size of the market it is in dont undercut your prices.
Thanks Charles, I saw all that in the scale table. Appreciate it!
listed more info
rates local small m per spot 50-100
large market 150-400
regional 200-500
national 500-1,000 or standard union rates
tages 5-10 seconds
local-25.00-100.00
regional-75.00-200
national 100.00-300 or standard union rates
Note:the payment for one tag is included with the payment for one spot.hpwever, commonly you be requested to record mutiple that you clarify tags along with the one spot.it is industry practice that you are paid"PER TAG"for all additional tags.I strongly sugguest that you clarify this with client priorto recording!
Notes if you record mutiple spots in one session you should be paid separetly for each spot
consider offering a discount forseries of spots
considering offering scratch tracks for free or heavily discounted rate
An"unlimited buy out"may payout more than a "one-year buy-out

Thanks Charles, for the extra information....very helpful.
The work is for a small scale documentary, on a small budget, a 2 :30 minute introduction to the film. any ideas?
It sounds okay to me, i've done a lot of thiswork free in exchange for studio time over the years, it depends onthe studio, if it's their project of course they can work that out.

If that's what you charge for a vocal session, go for it, I have a muso friend who would rather go out for 50 dolars on a gig than sit at home on his butt doing nothing, so I use him as much as I can and he also get's the big money gigs as well.
