I don't want to single anyone out and this ad on Facebook does not say who the advertiser is, but, I wonder if the kids setting up studio businesses like this really understand what they are doing to their credibility and the perception the public has of the recording services market.

I know pricing is all over the place and we live in a very competitive market, but really! I can understand under cutting the market at $35 and hour for a studio and engineer, but working for $20/hr late at night and $10/hr on weekends? The only message they send with this ad is "we are desperate AND stupid"

I am making the assumption that the kids (and I mean kids) that put this ad up, went to some kind of music business or recording school.

Did they really learn nothing about business in the school they went to?

I hate to see them fail, but they will, if they have any kind of overhead or are not on some kind of government assistance, mark my word.

That's not all he's missing Dave....
:)
I've been busy and just read this.I think it's good these people are "trying" and wish them luck, they have to start somewhere. If this small outfit rocks "the corporate boat" then I'm all for it.B.T.~ I understand your point fully,It's like me playing a 4 hour set to a packed house downtown and keeping the crowd there until closing time, the band makes what 200~300 bucks and the bar sold 10 grand in services to our crowd ..that we either brought in or kept there, then the next night I'll see a loose, non pro weekend warrior outfit with 12 people in the house all night and know that band made the same pay, almost the same scenario.Whatever the case may be,I'm glad to see one less for sale sign or vacant building on Music Row.Thank you for this AWESOME Nashville Music Pros website!!!
Is there really a "Corporate Boat to rock" in the commercial studio business these days?
I feel the same way about the bands that play on Broadway (and beyond) for $200.00 per night (5 piece bands!) HELLO!!

It also frustrates me that bands would rather "express" themselves and their musical prowess, than play to the audience. If you'd like to play your experimental fifteen minute "look at me" original songs, that's cool. But don't whine about being paid $75.00 (for the entire band). It's a BUSINESS!!! Asses in the seats!!! It's always the big bad club owners fault that he doesn't want to pay a band full of so called virtuosos more than $100.00 bucks. I mean, shouldn't "The Man" just eat it when you only bring in 5 people? (3 of which are on your "VIP Guest List")

Sorry to rant. Just so sick of the complainers. NICHE folks!! Find something you do better than anyone else, and market the hell out of it.
Good point Dan.When I was a kid I didn't think about expenses and as I got older..well cha~ching.I do feel that if a cover band don't draw a crowd then "free rehearsal" and the club shouldn't have to pay full price or anything at all in some cases depending on the situation. However,it's a club owners responsibility to keep it's clients happy and entertained so if a club don't audition and carefully critique it's entertainment and check for reference's..well..and really,I personally don't carry a bus load of fans with me when I go 100 miles away to play a gig so business being business, promotions for the venue aren't my responsibility and I totally expect to be paid in full...so yes,in most cases "The Man" should eat it for not promoting "The Man's" venue...and it's ok to rant from time to time,it's healthy.
I agree
Wow! And I only thought Nashville Musicians victimized themselves by undercutting each other in their Race to the Bottom! That's really sobering....
However, I wonder what $10 to $20 an hour buys in the way of expertise...
You are absolutely correct. I was quoting Greg Hopkins and accidentally attributed it to you. Maybe Bret can modify my post so the attribution is correct. Sorry about that.

"Lynn,

I don't know if this is a missprint but I didn't say any of this. I don't get into the technical aspects of recording. You might mean to respond to someone else in this thread.

Same guy.

"I have been pretty successful in the business, but I attribute none of it to Full Sail," says Ryan Goldbacher, a 2005 Full Sail grad and the founder of Rain King Recording in Nashville. Goldbacher went so far as to post a video on YouTube that calls Full Sail a "scam," and his is one of numerous online rants by former students, some named and some anonymous, claiming the school is a big rip-off.

Did you read down into the comments where over 50% of them are his? At least he reveals the secret to why he has no need to run a reputable business - trust funds were set up for him when he was very young by his grandparents and parents which paid his whole way through Full Sail. That makes it pretty easy to claim you are a successful studio owner on the row that charges $10 an hour for time and Full Sail engineering skills.

The only thing I see he has been successful at is spending his trust fund.

Strangely enough, this studio is in the old Hummingbird building at 7 Music Sq. W., where I did many sessions.
