You know, most of the guys who work here will still go for Sony V6's or 7506's over anything else - except for those who bring their own isolation phones like the Vic Firth or Extreme Isolation. A few (primarily fiddle players) still prefer Fostex phones.

Honestly, I need to buy another half dozen pairs of Sony's; they WILL blow up if turned up too loud...
This is one of those things that's kind of personal. Like monitors. What can you stand wrapped around your head for hours on end??? That being said, I think it depends on what the phones are used for. All the ones mentioned above are great. A couple to add to the list...

For personal use and alternate monitoring, I would recommend the Ultrasone Pro 750 Circumaural Headphone. In my humble opinion, it's hard to find better sounding cans & they feel great. However, if you are looking for a few pair of rugged phones, for client use etc. We've had three pairs of Sennheiser HD 280 with heavy use for the last 5 years with no problems. Very reliable, and down the middle of the road. Good Luck on your search!
Ultrasones seem really awsome to me! They work well.
I really Like the Sennheiser HD 280's Ive had a set for a couple years and they do yeomens work for LIVE and Recording Use, I wish they had the 1/4 Plug instead of the Mini Jack but they work great and sound good. I recently had a guy who was doing a recording right next to me ask to Listen to my Cans, He had a funny look on his face, The next day he showed up with a pair of these Senn 280's...
My DH 280's came with a 1/4" gold tip screw-on adapter. Check out yours, it's really easy to overlook, maybe they have the ability to screw an adapter onto the 1/8" plug?? If you can, would imagine you can get one at radioshack, or guitar center. Let me know!

best, MJ
+1 on the 280s. Reasonably priced, sound great, sealed circumaural design for low bleed. I love them...
Screw headphone buy yourself a good set of in ear monitors.
It seems it's hard for vocalist to properly hear themselves with in the ear monitors... at least in the studio... or so it seems to me.....
Agreed. I hate singing w/ in-ears, unless the mix is just perfect coming to me. You hear such a large amount of your voice reverberating in your own head, I think it messes with most people. I will occasionally use in-ears under regular cans if someone just wants the mix way too hot, and we're getting bleed. This helps if I'm trying to track a finger-picked acoustic part to a click.
If you're looking for something a little different, I've got a few pairs of Ultrasone HFI-450's. I've been really, very impressed with them. Not too hyped, can take a lot of pain, travel well, long cable, really sturdy and they isolate (both from outside sounds and from keeping bleed) quite well, without making you feel like you've gone deaf to everything around you.
Yea, I've been using 550's, and really like them... Thanks
Honestly, I have had a pair of Beyer Dynamic's DT-770's for the past few years and used them in conjunction with the HD-280's and two more pairs of V6's. After 5 years of constant use I only have DT-770's. Seems to be quite the workhorse!
