Too Good for This?

I just finished two days of work with a band in Baltimore. They are great musicians and have always been told this. Typically musicians of this caliber would say, “We’re good enough, we don’t need any of that Tom Jackson stuff!”To their credit, someone in the band knew their show was still lacking, and saw the value in getting some help, after hearing Tom speak. They ordered our videos, watched them together, then got on the phone and asked me to come up and do some one-on-one sessions.I don’t…See More

Connecting to a Wireless Audience

Check Tom Jackson's blog today - FREE pass Backstage!..... This is why I get hired by so many artists and bands: to help them create moments in their show so they can connect emotionally with their audience. If you could take a cord and hardwire it to yourself, then wire that cord into the whole audience so they feel the same thing you do about your songs, you’d sell out your entire stock of CDs the next time you played. You’d sell out because those emotions YOU feel would get translated…See More

Look 'em in the Eye!

Lately, a lot of artists I’ve worked with have emailed me, saying how great the things we developed in their rehearsals are working. That gets me so excited! Just last night I heard from a folk singer who had me come and work with her band. They are ramping up for a big show the end of this week and are in rehearsals. In the meantime she did a solo gig at a singer/songwriter venue. She said the only thing she did differently that night was to look at people. And she said that eye contact made…See More

Profile Information

Occupation:
Live Music Producer/Performance Coach
Company Name:
Tom Jackson Productions
About Me:
Spent many years as a recording artist, fronting bands. (Also worked as a jingle writer, producer and session singer.) Now I'm on the other side of the stage, focusing on making an artist's performance great. Audiences don't come to shows to just hear music. They come to concerts to experience moments, to be captured and engaged with the artist, and to be changed. Unless an artist 'wins the lottery' with a huge hit song, 95% of their revenue comes from their live shows, yet rarely do they spend time and effort working on that. Paradigm Shift Happens

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:24am 0 Comments

Change is hard. And change is especially hard if you’ve been doing something the same way for 20+ years. But change is the new normal… especially in technology and in the music business.

A recent article in The Tennessean caught my eye. It was an interview with Mike Snider, co-head of Paradigm Talent Agency (Dave Matthews Band, Coldplay, Toby Keith, Aerosmith). He was asked…

Do You Have the Courage it Takes?

Tom Jackson's new blog out today is a must-read! Check it out.

Taking risks can be a scary thing. In all the years I’ve worked with artists, I can’t recall one artist who didn’t have an invisible wall of fear – something they were afraid or uncomfortable to try.

If I do my job as a Live Music Producer correctly in the rehearsal room, and if there is freedom to explore ideas, then artist development happens, and the artist will eventually be confronted with…

Loved the post about live shows. Two shows come to mind. Sammy Davis jr and Don Rickles. Both were past their finest years but they could suck an audience into their world and mesmerize. Last time I saw Rickles he was in his 80's and still held the audience in the palm of his hands.

Hi Amy- just noticed your post on the producer page- I like what you have to say about live shows- it's so true. The repore with an audience is what builds long term fans. How often have we seen a performer or band that acts like they're not even interested in hearing themselves play! Of course we deal with the reciprocal in the studio- bands cant rely only on their live energy, good looks and contact with an often inebriated audience to make a great recording, though it no doubt helps for inspiration. Keep up the good work!

CRS week was crazy busy, but that was good. A few sessions mixed in with some downtown stuff, and playing some colleges around the south with an indie artist. My main gig is Adam Fears, and he's in the process of selecting a manager so we're not gigging alot at the moment. But I did his CD and I have songs up on myspace if you're interested. Take care!
