"Just to answer one question you posed. Yes it happens. I remember Chuck Ainlay talking to a group at Ocean Way in a forum a few years back. He was describing how he setup a laptop with Nuendo and a Avalon(737 I think) pre and a mic(prob U-47) and…"

George Cumbee replied to Bret Teegarden's discussion Home Studios - Effects and concerns.... in the group Studios
"On that I agree. It has always been my argument. But the home based studios need to operate in the same legal manner. If not then don't. Like my example I have used. I was on a jury that put a 19 yr old kid in prison on a felony drug deal on an…"

Profile Information

Occupation:
Studio Owner/Engineer
Company Name:
Classic Recording
About Me:
Got into music in 1962 playing drums in school. Later in bands in high school and college. I played on many recordings starting when I was 15 in Nashville. I started playing with small tape recorder at about 14 when my parents bought me a little 3" portable reel recorder. In college joined an 8 pc group with horns ala Chicago/BST style. Later signed with CBS records from a demo we made in our practice house with me using 2 1/4tr stereo recorders to bounce tracks. Released album and single recorded at Woodland with Bob Montgomery and Bobby Goldsboro producing, Lee Hazen engineered. We were a one single, one album, no hit group. Later quit and became a television director which was what I studied in college. Worked for a UHF independent and later an NBC affiliate in my hometown. I was always the resident audio expert since no one else knew anything about it, so I did a lot of that also.

I did location recording with a Crown 4tr for several years and also used a little studio that a friend had built. I setup my Crown and TASCAM 12x4 board and recorded people. I was the only place around to do that. In 1976 a friend called an invited me to join him and another investor to build a real studio. We built a pretty nice place and went to LA and bought a large Spectra-Sonics custom console and a new 2" 16tr 3M machine and lots of outboard stuff. We became the only pro studio between St. Louis and Nashville. So we got very busy. In the 80's I had a bus in my parking lot all the time doing custom Gospel albums. We built a solid reputation in the Southern Gospel, fundamental Christian music and others including theme park companies and jingle producers. We brought many musicians and singers from Nashville to work on these.

I also traveled for a national sound company doing concerts, shows, TV productions all over. . Toured with several major acts and did many US President and VP events. I chief engineered the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade for WPVI-ABC for about 15yrs as well as many other events like rodeos and telethons. I still am CE for the Paducah, KY Lions Club Telethon and have been since 1974. It is a large event for a small town.

I moved my studio business to Nashville in 1997 when I bought Classic Recording in Franklin/Cool Springs. I have remained living in Paducah since my wife is a school teacher there and we wanted to stay close to our family. I commute back and forth as needed. Both driving and flying which happens to be my only hobby. I started flying several years ago and find it very rewarding and challenging. I am both Private and Instrument rated. HP and Complex endorsed(pilots know what that means). I own a 1977 Piper Turbo Arrow III shown in my photos.

I am married to Suzanne(39yrs) and we have 2 daughters, Gretchen Marie(34) and Laura Beth(30). One son-in-law Greg(Gretchen's husband) and a wonderful grandson Owen and new grandaughter Molly Claire born 2/23/09.

Howdy George,
Wow, our bios are a lot alike--at least the part where you're bouncing between 2 1/4tr reel-to-reels:-)
See you soon,
Paul
