Jill Courtney replied to Ed Bazel's discussion Suggestions on best acoustic piano in studio in Nashville?
"Yes. We have an unusual choice, but it is stellar - a must-try. We have a Young Chang-Pramberger 6'1" Grand. In the store, it won out against Yamahas and Steinways due to its playability and tone. It is seriously our pride and joy.  :…"

Jill Courtney replied to Ed Bazel's discussion Suggestions on best acoustic piano in studio in Nashville?
"We have a fantastic grand piano in our studio. In fact, piano players book our studio BECAUSE of the piano, and nothing else! We are located in East Nashville.  Call me if you want to come play around with it and see for yourself -…"

Profile Information

Occupation:
Recording Studio Owner/Engineer, Educator, Vocal Coach, Writer, Songwriter, Doctoral Student, Occasional Actress/Singer/Dancer
Company Name:
JCreative Multimedia
About Me:
A singer/songwriter, audio and video production specialist, entrepreneur and voice/performance coach, Jill Courtney has been the lead singer of various rock, funk, 80s, soul and jazz bands, and has also been in many musical theatre/theatre performances in New York, Nashville, Minnesota, and Colorado. Favorite roles include playing "Dolly" in Hello, Dolly! and "Desiree" in A Little Night Music.

Ultimately, she views herself as the musical lovechild of a random threesome between Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, and Bono (from U2 - ever heard of them?).

Album Info:

"Eyelash Wishes"
Jill's first full, original, published album. It was also the first full album that Jill completed as a beginning engineer at NYU. She wrote all songs, recorded and performed on most of the instruments (bass and drums were a "MIDI into for-hire" situation because the MIDI sounded like a freakin' fiasco). As her first studio recording album-in-full attempt, she wishes to preserve the songs in their original, complete, untouched form as an example of how far she's come in the audio realm. The finished album was submitted in support of her Master of Music thesis in Music Technology, and is on file at NYU's Bobst Library. © 2005

"Too Legit To Quit: Live"
Her second album is a live classical/opera concert album, performed at a church in Houston, TX. © 2010

"Commercial Covers Vocal Demo"
An album that contains various vocal styles in the commercial music realm. This is an album full of well-loved cover songs that present Jill's vocal range and abilities. © 2011

"The Color of Blues"
A blues standards album, slated for a 2012 release.

"Fiasco"
Jill's sophomore album of originals, also slated for a 2012 release. The first track released is "Floor Show."

Jill Courtney holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from St. Olaf College (Northfield, MN), a professional performance degree in Musical Theatre Performance from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (New York, NY) and her Master of Music degree in Music Technology from New York University (New York, NY).

As an active Audiovisual Multimedia Production Specialist (audio stuff, video stuff, photography stuff, multimedia stuff), Jill co-owns a business called Sharkbait Studios (www.sharkbaitstudios.com), which has operated in New York City, Nashville and Texas as a full audio and video production company. Currently, Sharkbait Studios is based in Nashville, TN.

An educator, she has taught for Belmont University, Tennessee State University, The Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville and John Robert Powers-Nashville, as a commercial and classical voice instructor, a director of ensembles, and an audio instructor. Recently, Jill took a two-year sabbatical from Nashville to serve as Coordinator of Commercial Music and Voice at Lamar State College-Port Arthur.

Jill lives in Nashville, TN.

Fun facts:

In 2005, her first album, "Eyelash Wishes" was her first studio recording attempt, where she also acted as musician on many instruments that she can barely play. She did the entire writing/recording process in one week's time. "The Shower Song" was the first recording, done while drunk, to overcome technological phobias. It, too, is in its preserved drunken state. Forever, bitches.

In 2009, she began an ill-fated Ed.D. degree attempt. While she holds a 4.0 (first time in her life), she only completed 9 credits, took a break from school to start a new job, and by the time she went to re-enroll, the program had been dropped as a school offering. Whatever.

In 2009, she received the "Perfect Attendance" award for serving for a year on Nashville's committee for the Audio Engineering Society. How adorkable!

Jill's 2010 live classical concert album, "Too Legit To Quit" was rehearsed and performed with a hurt foot, a throat infection, and a rash over half of her body. Yes, it is also on DVD. The show must go on, y'all.

Jill has resided in Wisconsin (1974-1977), Ohio (1977-1979), Colorado (1979-1993), Minnesota (1993-1997), New York (1997-2005), Tennessee (2005-2009, 2011-present), and Texas (2009-2011). Outlaw?

Texas: The Story

Posted on July 9, 2009 at 9:45am 0 Comments

While Greg and I planned to be in Nashville for longer, sometimes life has other ideas.

About three months ago, Greg and I saw job listings online that while interesting, didn't motivate us to apply due to the location - Port Arthur, TX. Not knowing exactly where Port Arthur was, we immediately decided against applying for jobs, even though the two were pretty perfect for us - and at the same school - a real rarity. Being from Colorado, I admit I have a slight prejudice against… Continue

Any men out there - feel free to take my survey, but please only take it once - also, be as honest as you can be - there is no right answer, only your anonymous opinion, which is highly valued.

Thank you in advance, and let me know if you have any questions.....

Female Audio Engineers - New Book, New Blog

Posted on June 20, 2008 at 11:55am 1 Comment

Hey there to all who may be interested.

I have been working on a book called "Audio Chicks" which is far from being finished. Anyway, I have a blog that is following my interviews and progress, and I thought some of you might be interested in seeing who I am interviewing along the way.

I am in the "pioneers" phase, where I am interviewing those who have been in the business for over ten years - in some cases 20 or 30 years (or more)!

This book will be for men… Continue

Newbie to NMP

So I am excited to have found this website while researching. I didn't know that it was in existance, yet I have several people that I know on it!

Now I am on myspace, facebook, linkedin, nashville music pros, and probably several more that I don't remember. As if I have the time to check all of those!!

Myspace is about the only other one that I check with regularity, and it is mainly to check the Sharkbait Studios page and delete all the pornstars that think that the… Continue
