Rand Bishop, short bio:

Rand Bishop is a Grammy-nominated, BMI Award-winning songwriter with more than 250 cuts to his credit — by such diverse artists as Beach Boys, Heart, Cheap Trick, Indigo Girls, Tim McGraw and Vanilla Fudge. My List, recorded by Toby Keith, spent five weeks at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart and was R&R’s most-played country single of 2002. Rand's latest book is The Absolute Essentials of Songwriting Success (Alfred Publishing, 2010). His novel/mock-memoir, Grand Pop is now making the rounds for development as a premium cable series or feature film. His second book, Makin’ Stuff Up (secrets of songcraft and survival in the music-biz), is “a songwriting course wrapped in a memoir,” as it recounts true-life tales from his 40-year career — as a recording artist, producer, A&R exec, and music publisher. E-Gherming, The New Music-biz No-no...

Posted on November 16, 2010 at 8:24am 11 Comments

As in all businesses, the most important and essential contributors to our success in show-biz come from the personal relationships we develop and maintain over the course of our careers.

Someone put it very succinctly when he or she said: "It's not about who

you know; it's about who knows you." To take that very truthful statement

a little bit further: It's not just about who knows you, it's about who…

Trapped In An Era

Posted on April 27, 2010 at 12:00pm 1 Comment

Have you ever noticed how some music productions seem to be

trapped in an era, while, even years after they were recorded, others remain fresh and timeless? Due to available recording technology and prevailing production trends, records tend to be branded as coming from a certain era and

even more specifically from a genre popular during that period of time. A few years

pass and these recordings…

Why Do Songwriters Resist Coaching and Feedback?

Posted on December 1, 2009 at 8:52am 9 Comments

Question:

Why is that so many songwriters are so incredibly resistant to seeking and accepting coaching and feedback on their craft?

Lets discuss...

My friend, music-biz book guru, Mike Lawson has done extensive research, studying which book titles sell, and which tend to languish. I’m paraphrasing here: “A tech guy, with no literary talent whatsoever, can write a boring-as-dirt text on how to mix in ProTools, or maybe a book on the subject of microphone… Continue

Find Your Spine, Music Row!

Posted on June 17, 2009 at 10:58am 10 Comments

Since my wife gave me satellite radio for my car two Christmases ago, I haven’t felt compelled to listen to much country radio. There is a wonderland of new alternative and roots music to discover, as well as comedians to amuse me and informative political talk to get my dander up. However, after dropping my daughter off at work, driving her car (sadly deprived of XM/Sirius), I decided to check in on what’s happening on the country airwaves.

Although I’d recently read about some… Continue

Rand, I'm Loving the NEW Book, I've shared with Michael Laidley. I esp.liked the co-writing section, I have started to co-write because of that chapter. The advice about the PROs is worth the price of the book alone. Good luck with your sales.

Rand... I find your book "Makin Up Stuff" one of the most real "reads" about the songwriting business I've ever found. I love the fact that it inspires true artistry, not just clever rhymes. Also, like a good song, it communicates the message by painting the picture with multicolor stories of life.

I also truly enjoyed your talk at Indie Connect. You rock in many ways, man.
