The Glamor of the Road

It's 4am our time, 5am local. We've just pulled up to a motel some 30 miles from the bluegrass festival. It took thirteen hours to get here, no chance for sleep, the singer left days before but the rest of us had to stay in town for gigs so we had to take my van.

Leona Williams is such a great artist!

Leona Williams has become a hero to me where Country Music is concerned. I love the music of Leona Williams. In the last couple of years I have had the opportunity and the blessing of realizing the greatness of  not only the music of Leona Willams but also great and strong writing of this very talented artist. She has a style all of her own where vocals are concerned. In studying her music, it has taught me many new and wonderful vocal techniques. Not only has her music been a great and…

Blessings In Disguise.

I'm sure you have heard the saying "God works in mysterious ways." In being a Nashville Singer/Songwriter it can be a tough row to hoe. Just like anywhere else in the world, The World Of Entertainment has been said to be the toughest career there is. In my case, the same holds true. I cry out to the Lord to give me direction, wisdom and strength. Every time I prepare for a performance, I pray that God will give me the right words to say and the right songs to sing.…

The Sweethearts Ball of Nashville!

As a teenager, where I attended school, we also had a Sweethearts Ball. There was a Homecoming Court and a Queen was crowned at the end of the Ball. Well, needless to say, not only was I not crowned Homecoming Queen, not only did I not make Homecoming Court but I didn't even have a date. That's right. This was a painful and embarrassing moment of my youth which I chose to forget about until this last weekend. Last Sat. was the Sweethearts Ball in Nashville and I was requested to be there. I…

YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW

Good morning said a woman as she walked up to the man sitting on ground. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new.. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before.. "Leave me alone," he growled.... To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows. "Are you… Continue

2009 Halloween Poem! (The Broken House)

It's becoming a tradition for me to write one of these a year for my family. They've come to expect it. Here's the 2009 edition. Barely finished in time for the day!

The Broken House

Once Alive though years ago

Arches of beauty looked down the row

Now covered deep with vines and weeds

And trees above with roots in earth below

Fallen leaves tumble to the ground

Once green, then gold, then red, then brown

They tussle with the wind and… Continue

What To Eat Before You Sing

It can be confusing to know that many people can eat chips, coke, even ice cream right at the mic and seem to suffer none of the vocal complaints that lay many others low. Yet voice scientists, doctors and vocal coaches frequently give long lists of things that you should never do if you want your voice to be healthy. Some people become afraid - almost superstitions- that eating anything before singing will sabotage their performance, and then they don't have enough energy to power and control… Continue

Don't Miss the Moment!

We at Onstage Success are always talking about getting a plan for your show. Mining the moments in your songs, rehearsing them, mapping out what they should look like, and so on. This is crucial in becoming a great performer, and we help artists learn how to do this very thing.

Once you’ve laid the groundwork with a plan for your shows, spontaneity is then free to happen within that framework and will enhance what you’ve already got in place!

Speaking of…

Measuring Success

I saw something today that really got me thinking. We spend a lot of time, especially in the music business, talking about success. But what is success, really? It’s completely subjective.

Last week I had surgery to remove a tumour in my knee (it’s benign, just pesky and it keeps growing back for some unknown reason). It’s the second time I’ve had this surgery, so I’m practically a regular now at the physiotherapy unit at Vanderbilt Hospital. I’m no stranger to the… Continue

Bring on the NEW STUFF!!!

We’ve had some “snow days” here in Nashville this winter (Canadians, insert scornful laugh here), so it’s been a good time to be indoors avoiding the 2 inches of snow that shut the city down.  So what have I been doing to pass the time?

Recording a new CD - YAY!!!

Having new photos taken - YAY!!!

Building a new website – YAY!!!

Writing new songs – YAY!!!

Having knee surgery - YAY!!!

(Well, not so much yay for that last one, but you can’t…

“Keys to Longevity In the Music Biz” by Pastor Bob Beeman

I am one of those old guys. It has been 40 years now that I have been working with Christian rock music. At the beginning, there were only a handful of us. Today, it has become a very profitable market. There are very few of us around anymore. Some have gone on to be with the Lord, and others have simply dropped out. But for those few who are still involved, I see a common thread.

Let me first say that I am not one of those “remember the good ol’ days” kinda guys. For me, THESE are the… Continue
