Free Benefit Concert w/ Jaci Velasquez & Salvador - 3/9 @7pm FBC in Brentwood

Hello NMP!

This is sure to be an outstanding night of music - Jaci Velasquez, Salvador, Fellowship Bible Church, and a whole bunch of volunteers are donating everything for the performances. All monies raised will go to the families impacted by the tornados that struck Tennessee earlier this month.

Could you please spread the word sharing this with others?

Thanks in advance for the… Continue

The Schematics Vault

Happily, I'm introducing the Schematics Vault, a pro audio schematic library I've created on my website. This is an open source, community project, so please email me if you want to share any schematics you may want to add.

I hope you find this resource as helpful as I have. It is the product of much labor on the part of myself (and my poor interns!)

you… Continue

New Studio web site

Hi, folks!

I've just re-done my studio's webs site - after 5 years, it was past time. I'm not sure if it's as cool as the old one was, but I really needed to have some new audio samples and other stuff. With the new site, the gear list and the photos are more up to date (and there are at least pictures of the piano now).

If you get a minute and feel the urge, please check out and let me know if you have suggestions, criticisms or problems loading any of… Continue

i love to follow blogs. the random musings of strangers that, more often than not, peak my interest.

i ran across this post, relating the story of a road trip the writer had recently taken:

"I got to thinking: If I could spend these six hours in the car talking with someone, who would it be? Of course, Jesus was my first choice (go right to the top!) but after that I came up with an interesting list of people."

while i've heard this question posed in so… Continue

Change is in the air

For the last few months I've been with country artist Mark Wills as FOH engineer but a great opportunity has come my way. A good friend just became tour manager for Joe Nichols and asked me to come on to run monitors.

This should be a very good year.

A Wee Pint of Guinness (Performing in Ireland)

I just got back from a terrific week in Ireland, where I performed at the 4th annual Belfast Songwriters’ Festival. I had the opportunity to play a couple of acoustic shows with Don Schlitz and Pat Alger, who are some of my greatest songwriting influences. Don wrote a slew of hits including Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” and Allison Krauss’s “When You Say Nothing at All”, and Pat wrote a bunch of hits including Garth Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls” and “Unanswered Prayers”.

The week… Continue

Anyone up for some live music?

I started this year vowing to hear some of the amazing live music that Nashville has to offer and I am already very happy I did! I had neglected to get out the last few - okay, many - years and I've missed a lot. It seems too that live sound has improved and I don't mind the amount of non-smoking clubs (hey smokers, no offense intended). Tell me about some of your favorite venues and acts. I just saw Paper Route at The Basement and they blew my mind!
See you at the club.

I'm in the clique...

"... I'm really slick, I know every trick and I can get a chick 'cause I'm in the clique" (I think that's how the old Todd Rundgren song goes). Anyway, I just set up this page, since my buddy JR McNeely gave me the skinny on this site. I'm sure it will be a life changing experience (we'll maybe not) but at the least, a lot of fun. I've been paying my bills doing music since I was a teen with delusions of being the next Ed Van Halen or David Gilmore, but I've only been in town the last 4… Continue

Analogy To Our Tax System

Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it

would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.

The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3.

The seventh would pay $7.

The eighth would pay $12.

The ninth would pay $18.

The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So,… Continue

Great Quote From Alex Van Halen!!!

Alex Van Halen From Modern Drummer Magazine:

MD: Isn’t it great that kids can have instant singles downloaded to their iPods?

AVH: I thinks it’s destroyed the whole idea of having an album. To have a collection of songs that are somewhat connected, but not. The idea to have a cohesive piece of work to be representative of a certain period of your life, those things that have depth and add meaning to what you do, aren’t there anymore. This is a disposable society and… Continue

Tracking Session Calculators (updated rates)

Here are a couple spreadsheets that I put together to quickly calculate all the little costs that go into a tracking session. It includes all the H&W and Pension costs for the players, cartage, producer, engineer, assistant, studio, piano tuning, backups, and misc. You can plug in numbers and in a few seconds have an accurate idea of tracking costs. There are two scales... Master and Limited Pressing. Just put the appropriate numbers into the colored areas. Remember the union rates will go… Continue

Sampled vs. Real

First off nothing beats a real piano in a great studio. That being said, its getting alot easier to fool people with samples. I'm getting the best response out the Kontakt version Sampletekk pianos (7Seas Grand, TBO, & Black Grand).

I'd say the next gen pianos are going to be amazing. Hopefully we can start getting pianos that come on their own hard drive....

Let me know if you have any tips for getting the most out of a sampled piano (Midi tricks, EQ, Limiting). I have… Continue

I don't know about you, but I've had some REALLY bad times and some REALLY good ones....I'm so glad that Father said He would bring us THROUGH the valleys....

It's hard to look at your circumstances (while your going through them) and say, oh yeah, I know that Father is getting glory out of this and…

How many, many times have we heard this phrase? (READY! SET! GO!) The question we have to ask ourselves, ESPECIALLY ME is "who is doing the talking here" and which "voice" is telling us we are ready and everything is set and it's time to make that move.

I've learned from many experiences that if it isn't God's…

When I was growing up as a preacher's kid, the words: IT'S PRAYING TIME became a "constant" but also a very "ordinary" phrase to me...Me and my brother jus took it for granted that whatever the need was, the PREACHER would handle it and everything would be ok...My mom taught me how to pray, how to fast and HOW TO… Continue

How many times have each one of us stopped dead in our tracks and just looked up into Heaven and shouted: "WHY LORD" and WHY ME?" I know I have.

The thing or actually the "fact" that I've come to realize is just how important this word "WHY" is? Let me explain...When we are called by God (and we know this…

Recording a New CD

I’ve been having a blast in the studio recently working on a new CD. It’s actually going to be a new-and-improved “debut” CD. Like John Mayer’s second record (or the Barenaked Ladies if you’re Canadian), it will include re-recorded versions of several of the songs from my first “You Don’t Know Me” release along with a bunch of new songs. It’s intended for national distribution in Canada. My first CD (which will soon be out of print) was actually a combination of demo recordings that were made… Continue
