Another engineer friend and I were talking the other day about mixing in the box and what happens after the sessin leave our hands. In most cases these days, once it leaves me it goes to mastering and then to pressing, but what about those that have Pro Tools (or others) at home and like to tinker with the mix or take it somewhere else to do some touch-ups? Suddenly your mix becomes there mix, with your plug in choices and settings.... No I know nothing is sacred but theis couldn't be done 10 years ago. If you wanted to remix or recall a mix, you had to go to a studio with the same outboard gear and automation to get it back close. Even with recall settings, there are always variations, especially in Tube Gear. One choice would be to give them the mix, and a tracking session without any mixing automation or plugs. Anyone.........

I had a similar experience as Melissa with a rough mix that the producer and I spent 2 days working on! Label heard it, loved it, and sent the drive to an LA guy who must have opened my session and hit "print". I think I could have mastered my rough and got it spankin' close to the record. Not only did I not get mixing credit, but no credit at all. Artist called me a few months after the cd came out to see if I could help in putting together a show-opening montage and some stem mixes for the live show. "You want my one-word answer or my two-word answer"?

Man, I'm gonna have to spend 100 hours doing Save As and pulling all my mix files in to a folder! DIgi needs to come out with an "clear all session data" function. Wouldn't that be nice? Save a Copy As... then click ... cleared out session with all tracks and audio intact, no plugs inserted, all faders at 0, all pans centered, no sends. I'd pay extra for that... Digi are you listing?

It's kinda like stealing. Mixing in the box lets people with less talent ride on your coat-tails. Did you at lest get mixing credits????

I got burned once and that was the last time. Not gonna name any names, but I was working with a major label client with Protools and we did all our rough mixes, etc with plug-ins, the whole shebang where we were under the impression that I was eventually going to mix the whole thing in the end. But the record co. changed their minds at the last minute and the client had the safety drive and brought it to the new producer/ engineer without my knowledge. I was sooo ticked when I heard the first single release and it sounded EXACTLY like my rough mix except that it had slightly different reverbs on it - balances, panning, EVERYTHING was the way I had left it. And this producer/ engineer is a Grammy-winning high profile type guy in L.A.! From now on, only I have the master session and I erase everything else :-)
